Welcome . . .
to Wayne State University’s Web site on influenza preparedness. This site contains tips on avoiding seasonal or “regular” flu, preparing for an influenza pandemic and Web resources to educate and inform the campus community about the threat of new influenza viruses.
Although there is currently no influenza virus that has developed in a way to become a worldwide pandemic, there is a critical need to develop a university-wide plan. Careful planning is our best defense against the threat of an influenza pandemic. It will allow Wayne State to respond rapidly and effectively to a major or mild outbreak.
Seasonal or “regular” flu is not pandemic flu. Seasonal flu regularly strikes North America between December and March every year. In contrast, pandemic flu can hit anytime during the year and historically recurs in waves over an 18-month period. Seasonal flu hits about 10% of the population while pandemic illness rates can soar to 30% of the population.
Wayne State Pandemic Preparedness Task Force developed a comprehensive plan to safeguard the well-being of students, faculty and staff, maintain critical services and lead the campus from crisis to recovery in case influenza pandemic strikes.
